The laboratory of the future

An exchange between healthcare, education and research

Framtidens Laboratorium attracts researchers from all over the world to conduct cutting-edge research in fields such as life sciences, medicine and haematology.

Framtidens Laboratorium attracts researchers from all over the world to conduct cutting-edge research in fields such as life sciences, medicine and haematology.

Framtidens Laboratorium is located adjacent to Karolinska Universitetssjukhuset in Huddinge, and the project aims to reinforce the collaboration and exchange of knowledge between the worlds of research, healthcare and education. We were responsible for the extensive interior design assignment, in close collaboration with the research facility.

Neo’s 15,000 m2 of space primarily contain laboratories, but also lecture theatres. Our assignment included spatial planning, positioning and the creation of the design programme that guided the whole interior of the building.

The project challenges the idea of the traditional laboratory environment – for instance, several of the laboratories are open to the adjacent corridors to provide opportunities for spontaneous encounters. One challenge was to find flexible solutions for many specific needs, and we have worked to achieve this on a number of different levels, from plug and play laboratory fittings to multifunctional rooms.

ANA Futura – Alfred Nobels Allé 8

Rebuilding has taken place over seven storeys of ANA Futura, with the reorganised laboratory space occupying one and a half floors, which now provide 9000 m2 of new laboratory and study environments. The new laboratories have been equipped for modern cutting-edge research, and spaces such as seminar rooms and special laboratories are designed to promote collaboration between students and researchers. The workplaces are carefully planned with more shared areas, allowing more resources to be devoted to research. A new system for laboratory fittings enables special adaptation of spaces, and even the smallest object offers storage space.
