Frøyland Orstad church

A little closer to heaven

Norway's first universally designed church for the parish of Orstad and Frøyland, located between Sandnes and Bryne.

The church's architecture, expression, and design are related to the landscape along the coast in the southern part of Norway. This is the first church in Norway that is universally designed. The church is a typical all-purpose church. In addition to ordinary services, the building is used for concerts, cafes, weddings, and other gatherings.

The church room is shaped like an amphitheater with good visibility from many sides. The interior design is inspired by the landscape. Stairs, benches, and floors have a coherent structure. The audience, the priest, and the choir are at the same height level, eradicating the distinction between those active in front and the congregation. Stairs lead down to the baptismal font, designed as the pool. The wooden roof lies like a wave of clouds in the sky. Slits on the side of the building's roof provide skylights and indirect lighting.

Chairs are made of birch which is good for acoustics. The seat covers are chosen with consideration to allergy sufferers. The church received the Accessibility Award in 2009.
