Idea study for the city port

Our landscape architects participated in the development of an idea study to establish a new island in the Oslo Fjord. Te purpose is to clean the fjord with Norwegian oysters and noble forests.

The unusual project was commissioned by the Port of Oslo, which wanted to shed light on the possibility of using surplus masses from the development of the Follo line to create a new island in the Bunnefjord.

Microclimatic conditions

With a landscape ecological approach, it became possible to establish a well-functioning new island landscape that contributes to improving the water quality in the fjord. The island's coastline and terrain were adapted to the characteristic shape of existing islands. The advantage of building a varied topography both above and below water is that different microclimatic conditions arise. Explosives are also particularly suitable for making artificial reefs for marine life underwater.

Cleans air, soil, and water

LINK has emphasized finding species communities that have essential properties for purifying air, soil, and water, and which are either found in the Indian Oslo Fjord or have been present in the area before, including the nearly extinct species oysters (Ostrea edulis) and eelgrass (Zosteria marina). Oysters, with their natural way of life, contribute to the purification of water. It is also edible and can be harvested. Increased growth of eelgrass will increase oxygen production in the sea, bind particles, provide nutrients, and good hiding places for fish, mollusks, and crayfish.

On land, a noble deciduous forest is proposed,  because it is threatened with extinction due to the development and growth of strong species such as spruce trees. The deciduous forest provides a habitat for insects, birds, and animals, at the same time as the foliage will produce nutrient-rich soil. Beach meadows are established to provide good nesting areas for birds.

The country is being shaped to ensure accessibility for everyone on Østerøy. Variety in the landscape rooms invites swimming, kayaking, fishing, marine allotment gardens, boating. Buildings are simple and energy efficient with a Nordic character. The solutions have clear pedagogical potential and invite a safe stay by the water.
